Perak inflict more misery on KL with T20 win

Perak avenged their defeat to Kuala Lumpur in last year's final with a five-wicket win to remain unbeaten in the MCA Senior T20 Inter State Championship at the Kinrara Oval on Sunday.

After restricting the defending champions to 78-9, Amir Azim Shukor's unbeaten 25 led Perak to 81-5 with 12 balls to spare as they opened a two-point lead over KL with their second successive win in the format.

The win follows a seven-wicket success over KL in the 50-overs competition on Saturday to ensure Perak, playing without national team captain Ahmad Faiz Mohammad Noor on Sunday, extend their winning run in all competitions.

Perak bowlers Khizar Hayat Durani and Dhivendran Mogan did the most damage with three and two wickets respectively as KL struggled for runs with just Imam Jawher (13), who scored the only six of the innings, and Harinder Sekhon (17) reaching double figures.

KL dug a hole for themselves by going four wickets down with just 22 runs on the board after captain Virandeep Singh (1), Saifullah Malik (9), Janidu Hamsara (1) and Neville Liyanage (7) fell inside 24 balls.

With a low total to defend, KL needed early wickets and had Perak in trouble at 48-5 but Amir Azim and Adnan Danish Saleem steered their side to the win with an unbroken 33-run partnership.

Amir Azim hit three fours off Sachinu Hettige, including two in a row, to bring up the winning runs and finish on 25 off  15 balls with four boundaries while Adnan scored 19 off 28.

Wayward bowling by KL aided Perak in their chase with a total of 11 extras, including eight in the first 10 overs, when Perak were finely placed at 38-2.

An improved bowling performance thereafter saw Pavandeep Singh break the stand of 23 between Amir Khan Malik (19) and Adnan before Himsara dismissed Durani the next over and had Sharvin Muniandy run out three deliveries later as Perak slipped to 48-5.

But Amir Azim's man-of-the-match performance with the bat ensured Perak did not suffer any more hiccups as they surpassed their target in 18 overs.

Perak put their unbeaten record on the line when they meet Negeri Sembilan in the 50-overs and T20 competitions on Feb 22 and 23 respectively at the Kinrara Oval while Klang Valley derby rivals KL and Selangor face off at the Selangor Turf Club.

Kuala Lumpur 78-9 in 20 overs (Harinder Sekhon 17, Imam Jawer 13, Khizar Hayat 3-9, Dhivendran Mogan 2-21)
Perak 81-5 in 18 overs (Amir Azim Shukor 25 not out, Adnan Danish 19 not out, Amir Khan Malik 19, Neville Liyanage 1-10, Pavandeep Singh 1-11)
Result: Perak won by 5 wickets.
