Canada romp past Qatar to stay top of Challenge League A

Two players scored hundreds as Canada romped to a 115-run win over Qatar in a top-of-the-table clash and remain undefeated in the ICC World Cup Challenge League Group A in Kuala Lumpur on Sunday.

Canada handed Qatar their first defeat after three matches to open a two-point lead thanks to centuries by Nitish Kumar (129) and Srimantha Wijeyeratne (112). They become the second and third centurion makers of the tournament after Canada captain Navneet Dhaliwal's hundred against Malaysia on Sept 19.

Qatar's Saqlain Arshad fell three runs short of a hundred as they began the chase well with a 149-run opening partnership with Kamran Khan (68) but were ultimately bowled out for 264 with seven balls remaining in chasing Canada's 379-4.

In another match, Singapore defeated Vanuatu by 42 runs at the Selangor Turf Club for their second win in three matches and move into second place on four points, ahead of Qatar on net run-rate.

Canada was in complete control at the Kinrara Oval as Rodrigo Thomas scored with 51 in an opening 97-run stand with Dhaliwal (38) before both were fell to Iqbal Hussain in the 18th over. That set the stage for the Kumar-Wijeyeratne show with the former facing 84 balls and hitting six sixes and 12 fours while the later reached 14 boundaries from 94 deliveries.

Qatar appeared set for a determined run-chase when they reached 181-1 but the exits of Arshad (97) and Zaheer Ibrahim to successive deliveries from Kumar precipitated the fall of a string of wickets. Kumar also excelled with the ball to scalp five wickets for 72 and claim the man-of-the-match honor.

Half-centuries by Tim David and Aryaman Sunil steered Singapore to 217 for seven in 50 overs after they had been in trouble at 15-2 before bowling out Vanuatu for 175 in 46.2 overs despite a fighting 77 by Nalin Nipiko.

Rohan Rangarajan scored 45 runs as Singapore recovered from an early blow by building a third-wicket stand of 110 with David, who scored his third straight fifty of the tournament by smashing two sixes and eight fours off 72 balls for 63 runs.

Simpson Obed captured the wickets of Rangarajan and David in the same over as Singapore lost four quick wickets to slip to 149-6 before No 8 Sunil's late cameo yielded 51 runs off 44 deliveries and featured three sixes and five fours in a productive partnership of 60 runs with Navin Param (23).

Obed, Patrick Matautaava and Williams Nalisa each took two wickets before Vanuatu launched their chase by going down to 30-4 by the ninth over. Ronald Tari (35 off 98) and Nipiko then set to work to revive Vanuatu with a 109-run stand but after the later was dismissed by Vinoth Baskaran, Singapore swiftly wrapped up victory by capturing the remaining five wickets for 36 runs. Sunil finished with four for 45 to take match honors while Amjad Mahboob claimed three for 20.
The action continues on Monday with the Causeway derby between Malaysia and Singapore at Kinrara while Denmark faces Qatar at the Selangor Turf Club.
