0

The Carl Schubert U23 Trophy (2016 & 2017 editions) begins  again today, 18 December 2017.

Starting off with the 3 day match (2 innings), the Kinrara Oval, Home of Malaysian Cricket is alive with white on a sunny sky day. Previous editions of the trophy had been interrupted by heavy rain and we hope to see none of that in the combined 2016 & 2017 edition. The 50 Overs match will play on 22nd & 23rd December while the last match of the tournament, the T20, will play on 24th December. Traditionally, the Carl Schubert U23 Trophy is 3 day innings match that has been played between Malaysia and Singapore since the 1990s. However, with both teams’ tight schedules, the trophy has been contested once in two years in the recent editions. Consequently, with 2 editions in one week of play, changes to the formats have been decided to include 50 overs and T20s as well.

The recent editions of this tournament are summed up as

2012 – T20 & Test Match (3 days innings) (Malaysia declared as winner of the series)
2013 – Test Match (3 days innings) (Malaysia declared as winner of the series)
2014 – 2 50 Overs & 1 T20 (Malaysia declared as winner of the series)
2015 – Test Match (3 days innings) (Malaysia declared as winner of the series)

Coach Roy Diaz handled the team for both the editions. Lt. Col (R) Gerard Singam was appointed as the Team Manager. Malaysia goes into the series as winners of the last series.

2014 & 2015 Edition

The 2014 and 2015 Carl Schubert U23 Trophy matches were held at Kinrara Oval and both events resulted in victories for Malaysia over Singapore.

The 2014 event was postponed from last year and it was decided that the 2014 series to be held before the 2015 series. The first one-day match saw Malaysia cruise to a 7 wicket victory after bowling Singapore out for 132. Kogilan Muthu set up the win with 4/25 in his 10 overs before a strong opening partnership between Fikri Makram (50) and Virandeep Singh (47) all but sealed the 1-0 lead.

Malaysia were confirmed as 2014 champions when they won a tight match by 6 runs on the D/L method. Youngster Syed Aziz top scored with a brisk 48 to set a target of 209 in 50 overs. Singapore were going well in the chase until a wicket by Varun Nadesh two balls before the heavens opened saw them slip behind the calculated D/L target. Fikri Makram 50 runs & Virandeep Singh 47 runs gave Malaysia victory by 7 wickets in 28.5 overs. Syed Aziz Mubarak contributed 24 n.o., and Deepak Sarika took 2 wickets for 39 runs. With 2 wins of the 3 match series Malaysia was declared the 2014 Carl Schubert Trophy winners.

In the T20, Virandeep Singh made 52 off 46 balls as Malaysia posted 154/4. Chasing 155, Singapore went along at the required rate but were pegged back at regular intervals by the hosts’ medium pacers. Aryaman Uchil (45) recovered the innings nicely until a late collapse of 4/13 set up a close finish.
