Malaysian cricket has made yet another milestone in our efforts of developing the cricket scene here in beautiful Malaysia. Our president, Mahinda Vallipuram has been elected by majority vote as the Associate Member Director to the International Cricket Council (ICC) Board. The ICC is the world governing body for cricket that governs and administrates the game and works with our members to grow the sport. The ICC is also responsible for the staging of all ICC Events.

The ICC Associate Member Directors are limited to only three positions, and one position was available after Ireland, represented by Ross McCollum relinquished their post to continue their cricket journey as a test-playing member. The ICC board commenced an online election to decide who shall take Ireland’s place. The voting result was taken on the night of 22nd September, and Mahinda took the spot after winning the vote-count.

“Mahinda is the man to take cricket development forward with new ideas and directions for the associate members. A wise choice from the voting members of ICC and I am confident that he will bring workable solutions to the table. Congratulations!”, commended Tunku Tan Sri Imran Tuanku Ja’afar, President of the Olympic Council of Malaysia.

Malaysia is to date, the only country to have had 2 representatives at this high level. The first, YAM Tunku Tan Sri Imran Tuanku Jaafar – also our Patron – was an Executive Board Member of the council for 9 years.

The next ICC Board meeting will be held in Auckland in October 2017, and Mahinda perhaps now has the opportunity, as an elected member, to address some of the global associate member concerns, such as development pathways for men and women, inclusion of cricket in multi-sport competitions (Asian Games, Olympics, etc.) and age verification, among others.

“I would also have the opportunity to participate in various development

platforms, look into organizational development and bring forward these concerns from the members.  I have always expressed my views, I feel it would be unfortunate if anyone in this position did not express their views openly. This is also perhaps reflective of what we are trying to do here and to push further the boundaries. I also have big shoes to fill, as YAM Tunku Tan Sri Imran has left an indelible progressive mark during his time at the ICC”, said Mahinda.

The Malaysian Cricket Association congratulates Mahinda for the outstanding election; as he takes another step towards glory for Malaysian Cricket.
