Kuala Lumpur: Malaysian men and ladies teams will for the first time participate in the Indoor Cricket World Cup this September in Dubai. The Malaysian Cricket Association as the sole governing body for cricket in the country was officially recognised by the World Indoor Cricket Federation on Monday. The respective heads of each organisation spoke to the media during a lunch following the exchange of documents at the Royal Selangor Club in Kuala Lumpur, the capital of Malaysia.
Mahinda Vallipuram who is the President of the Malaysian Cricket Association commented “This is indeed a big year for first for cricket in Malaysia, it is :-
- the first time cricket will be played in the SEA GAMES,
- the first time that Malaysia will be playing in the Emerging Countries Asia Cup with India, Pakistan , Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Afghanistan, Hong Kong, Nepal. The tournament will be played between the 27th March and 3rd April
- at the same time we have the possibility of qualifying for the ICC World League 2 and the ICC World League 3 Qualifiers will be played in Uganda – May 2017
AND now we will play in the Indoor Cricket World Cup in Dubai 11th – 24th September.
When asked about the impact of current sponsors of the national team Mr. Mahinda stated that “Due to the high profile of this announcement and the fact that the team will be playing in a World Cup we have opened up specific sponsorship options for those companies that wish to position themselves in the international arena.”
The chairman of the World Indoor Cricket Federation, Mr. Greg Donnelly stated “We are pleased to recognise the Malaysian Cricket Association as the sole governing body for cricket in Malaysia, this recognition paves the wayfor your national teams, both men and women, to be able to participate in the Indoor World Cup for the first time later this year in Dubai”
“I’m pleased to see that the game has developed in Malaysia and the role that the MCA has played developing this form of the sport is commendable, I have had a chance to see some cricket while I was here and I am sure that Malaysia will competitive a competitive force in this form of cricket even considering that they will meet some of the giants of the game.” Concluded Mr. Donnelly.
The squad will be chosen from the existing pool of national players, there will be a national indoor cricket tournament held following the SEA GAMES in August to finialise the squad, “We have not ruled out the possibility of naming specialist indoor players and the captain for the Indoor World Cup team will only be announced after the SEA GAMES. It is an immense oppurtunity to be playing with the likes of Australia, India, Sri Lanka, South Africa , England etc. As a preparation Malaysia and Singapore has come together to arrange a bilateral series and we are looking to play the innaugural series in July.
