The Youth and Sports Ministry have given the Malaysian Cricket Association (MCA) the green light to resume training activities during the Conditional Movement Control Order period. All cricket activities were put on hold since mid-March when the country went into lockdown due to the spread of the global Covid-19 pandemic. However, the government has since loosened some restrictions under CMCO, including certain sport activities. MCA's request for cricket to be considered as a non-contact outdoor sport was approved by the ministry, with training allowed to proceed without violating the conditions stipulated under CMCO. Organising matches and tournaments, however, must await approval of the National Security Council and Health Ministry. This approval applies for cricket training activities at all levels including national, state and club. The Youth and Sports Ministry agreed with MCA that cricket is an outdoor sport played without contact and fulfills conditions of the standard operating procedures (SOP) for the sports and recreation sector which enabled the reopening of the country's economy on May 4. The SOP does not however permit the organisation of sports events which will draw a crowd or outdoor activities which involve more than 10 people at any one time. Among the protocols under the SOP are social distancing measures of at least one metre, limiting the number of users at the training facilities, sanitation of the facilities and the wearing of face masks in public areas. MCA president Mahinda Vallipuram said the national governing body will take great care in implementing the SOP and ensure the effort put in by frontliners to stem the pandemic is not gone to waste. "We are appreciative of the work undertaken by the frontliners and the respective ministries. We urge all cricketers, state associations and clubs to follow the guidelines and work closely to prohibit any new phases of Covid 19. It is critical that we work together to ensure that we restart sport activities in this country," said Mahinda.
