The opening day of the 2024 ACC Women U19 Asia Cup had plenty of actions. The hosts Malaysia showed plenty of promises against a strong Sri Lankan side whereas India defeated Pakistan in a relatively one-sided contest. Skipper Nanayakkara’s counter-attacking knock shifted the match in Sri Lanka’s favor. The hosts caused problems for the Lankan batting lineup throughout. In the second match, India’s spin wizardry dismantled Pakistan’s innings as Sonam Yadav’s fabulous spell set up the match for the favorites. Sri Lanka Women U-19 vs Malaysia Women U-19 Sri Lankan skipper Manudi Nanayakkara won the toss and chose to bat first in the morning conditions of Bayuemas Cricket Oval. The team, however, was off to a rocky start following the loss of both openers early. Malaysian captain Nur Dania bowled Sanjana Kavindi, whereas the other opener, Hiruni Hansika, was castled by Suabika Manivannan. Bowlers continued to generate chances and were ultimately rewarded when Irdina Beh Binti Nabil took a catch at the point to dismiss Sumudu Nisansala off Nur Dania’s bowling. With Sri Lanka reeling at 18/3 inside the powerplay, Limansa Thilakaratne and Dahami Sanethma negotiated the bowlers and stitched a brief partnership. Suabika Manivannan’s excellent diving catch broke the partnership on the cusp of the interval to leave Sri Lanka at 44/4. Thilakaratne continued to grow in the match and with the captain at the other end, Sri Lanka accelerated the run rate. Boundaries started to flow as Nanayakkara picked her boundaries relatively easily and the left-handed batter brought up her half-century in just 29 deliveries. Nanayakkara smashed 10 boundaries and a couple of sixes on her way to 74* off 40. Thilakaratne, playing an anchor role to the skipper, remained unbeaten on 41 off 44 balls. The 109-run partnership for the 5th wicket between Thilakratne and Nanayakkara helped Sri Lanka set the target of 154. Malaysia got off to a steady start in their pursuit of 154. However, Rashmika Sewwandi dismissed Nur Dania to provide the first breakthrough. Three more wickets fell and Malaysia slumped from 15/0 to 15/4 within a few overs. Nur Ain Binti Roslan and Suabika Manivannan ground out the bowling attack. Roslan fell in the 10th over to Chamudi P Munasinghe and Suabika was caught in the mid-off by Sewwandi off Aseni Thalagune in the 17th over. No further wickets fell in the innings as Malaysia reached 59/6 at the end of the 20 overs. Hiruni Hansika picked up two wickets whereas Nur Ain Binti Roslan top-scored for the home side with 12. Brief Score : Sri Lanka Women U19 - 153/4 (20) ( Nanayakkara 74*, Thilakratne 41* , Nur Dania 2-21) Malaysia Women U19 - 59/6 (20) ( Binti Roslan 12, Manivannan 10 , Hansika 2-2) Player of the Match : Manudi Nanayakkara (Sri Lanka ) India Women U19 vs Pakistan Women U19 The second match of the day pitted arch-rivals India and Pakistan against each other. Indian bowlers dominated the proceedings from the outset. VJ Joshitha trapped Fizza Fiaz in front of the wickets in the second over which opened the floodgates. Bowlers struck at regular intervals as Pakistani batters failed to break the shackles. The introduction of left-arm orthodox Sonam Yadav in the 8th over completely derailed Pakistan’s innings. Yadav’s magical spell of 4/6 meant Pakistan put paltry 67 at the end of their innings. Parunika Sisodia and Mithila Vinod shared a wicket each in between Yadav’s devastating spell. India Women U19 had a shocking start to the chase. Fatima Khan dismissed Gongadi Trisha in the second ball of the innings to give her side a glimmer of hope. However, wicket-keeper batter G. Kamilini and Sanika Chalke batted with maturity to anchor the Indian innings. The maturity morphed into authority in no time. Once set on the crease, Kamilini decided to cut loose and smashed any hopes of Pakistan’s comeback. A superb hit over long-on was a fitting finish to the match as Kamilini’s 44* (29) sealed the match for India. Sanika Chalke’s watchful and unbeaten 19 off 17 complemented the blitz. Brief Score : Pakistan Women U19 - 67/6 (20) (Yadav 4/6) India Women U19 - 68/1 (7.5) ( Kamilini 44*, Chalke 19 , Khan 1/22) Player of the Match: Sonam Yadav (India) |
