Malaysia?s Under-19 players show fine form on India tour

The national Under-19 squad have gained valuable practice and experience after playing five matches on a tour of India.

Malaysia faced one of the eventual semi-finalists in the group stage of the 32nd Rajiv Gandhi Under-19 Twenty20 Championship in Hyderabad, Telangana before posting a morale-boosting win over Andhra Pradesh.

Tamil Nadu, who lost to Rajasthan in the semi-finals, proved too strong for the national players in their opening match on January 16 as they chased a target of 74 runs for the loss of four wickets.

In the second match against the Cricket Federation of India (CFI) the following day, Malaysia made a promising start in chasing a target of 142 with an opening partnership of 54 between Wan Amirul Zulkarnain and Aslam Khan Malik.

But CFI stemmed the flow of runs as Malaysia lost wickets at regular intervals, with the tail wiped out in the space of four balls to win by 17 runs.

Malaysia romped to a consolation 68-run win over Andhra Pradesh on January 19 as Shamsul Ikmal finished on 26 not out.

Bowlers Vijay Unni Suresh and Aiman Afiq each grabbed three wickets as Andhra Pradesh folded for 57 in 14.3 overs.

The national youth squad continued their tour with a six-wicket victory over St Johns Under-19s on January 21 before going down by five wickets to an India Under-19 selection the following day.

The team play three more matches before returning home at the end of the month.

Prior to leaving for India, the Under-19 team defeated Colombo University of Sri Lanka by five runs and 25 runs in two 50-over matches at the Kinrara Oval.

The tour of India is part of the team’s preparation for the ICC Under-19 World Cup Asia Division 1 qualifiers in April where Malaysia face Nepal, Singapore, the United Arab Emirates, Kuwait and Oman for a single qualifying berth to the Under-19 World Cup in South Africa in January and February 2020.
