10 May 2022, - Malaysia Cricket and Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) inked a Memorandum of Agreement at Universiti Kebangasaan, Bangi that is set to take the development of cricket up a few notches and reach a wider spectrum of potential players. The requisite of the agreement is that Malaysian Cricket will maintain and upkeep the YSD – UKM Oval cricket ground at UKM which will be used for high performance trainings, and tournaments in addition to organising various programmes with the aim to introduce cricket to the community in the surrounding areas. MCA will station a designated High-Performance coach to oversee the training programmes at UKM. With this MOA, UKM intends to strengthen its own cricket team, and together with Malaysian Cricket, UKM hopes to lead their team in playing at the national level. The use of the ground of a world-renowned varsity, doubtless, will, have far reaching effects on parents and children who are contemplating on taking up the sport or even those who have just been introduced to the sport. Through the selection process, if a player is selected to play on the national team, educational opportunities are abound, with scholarships being offered at UKM for eligible players. Yang Berbahagia Prof. Madya Dr. Mohd Suzeren Md Jamil, Vice Chancellor,(Student Affairs) UKM, remarked “ This initiative between Malaysian Cricket and UKM provides us with a perfect opportunity to be involved in the development plan of cricket and the athletes. UKM is honoured to be able to fully support the sustainability of sports, essentially cricket in Malaysia. He added that “Together with Malaysian Cricket, UKM hopes to play a major role in the planning and development of cricket programmes here on our varsity ground YSD UKM Oval. We also expect to open up academic opportunities for the players intending on higher education. We see this as a first step in the right direction towards creating opportunities for these players and to enhancing the sport of cricket in Malaysian”. In his opening remarks, Malaysian Cricket President, Mohammed Iqbal Ali Kassim Ali, said this “MOU is a perfect example of unified cooperation, where together we can create clear pathways for these young students” He stated that “Through the years, we have seen how cricket has shaped many young men and women. Here, I wish to make reference to basketball coach John Robert Wooden who said, “Sports do not build character, they reveal it “ Indeed, through cricket and sound education we will be able to reveal model characters who will do their families, communities and nation proud”. The MOA, that was signed by Deputy Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs, UKM, Prof. Prof. Dr. Mohd Suzeren Md Jamil and President of the Malaysian Cricket Association, Mohammed Iqbal Ali Kassim Ali sets a new benchmark for training and development of the sport whilst strengthening wholesome education pathways for young Malaysians. The signing was witnessed by the Director of UKM Sports Center, Dr. Zulkafli Amat and the Chief Executive Officer of the Sime Darby Foundation (YSD), Dr. Hjh Yatela Zainal Abidin. Also present at the ceremony were Senior Officers of UKM, Dinesh Muthuraman, Chief Operating Officer of Malaysian Cricket and Azzhar Ahmad, Malaysian Cricket Development Manager. |
