Malaysia T20 Quadrangular Series 2022 Day 6: Maldives Defend 97 to Down Spirited Thailand

In the only game of the day, Maldives skipper Yoosuf Azyan scored 24 and claimed figures of 4 for 12 in a player-of-the-match performance to lead Maldives to a 41-run win against Thailand.

After winning the toss and batting first, Adam Nasif cleared the infield twice for two boundaries in the first few overs.

Needing a wicket, Thailand turned to left-arm spinner Honey Singh in the final over of the powerplay. Singh delivered straight away, luring Nasif into a false shot, which was taken by Jeerasak Pakhiaokajee at mid off.

At 27 for 1 in the final over of the powerplay, Maldives had a good foundation to post something in the region of 120. Singh, however, continued to keep openers Azyan and number three batter Mohamed Rishwan in check with the duo only managing to score 14 runs in the next 28 deliveries as Maldives reached 41 for 1 at the end of 10 overs.

After the drinks break, Azyan broke the shackles with a slog sweep over deep mid wicket off Khanitson Namchaikul. The Thai off spinner, however, had the last laugh when he bowled Azyan, who was trying to repeat the dose off the very next delivery.

In spite of wickets falling more regularly, Maldives had enough ammunition in the tank to reach 93 for 5 at the end of 18 overs.

Maldives looked good for a total in the region of 110 as Thailand skipper Chanchai Pengkumta started itching for a breakthrough. That’s when he threw the ball to his fastest bowler, Kamron Senamontree.

The speedster did not disappoint, trapping Hassan Ibrahim and Ibrahim Rizan in front off consecutive deliveries before bowling Leem Shafeeg with a searing yorker to complete a dramatic and potentially match-turning hat trick.

Maldives were eventually dismissed for 97 in 19.3 overs as Thailand sensed an opportunity to cause an upset.

Sadly for Thailand, their chase got off to a rocky start as Pakhiaokajee and Narawit Nuntarach were both trapped plumb LBW by Adam Nasif in a boundary-less powerplay, which only yielded 13 runs. The post-powerplay period started in concerning fashion when Phiriyaphong Suanchuai was struck on the grill by a ferocious Hassan Ibrahim bouncer.

The Thai wicket-keeper batter retired hurt as a precautionary measure as Chaloemwong Chatphaisan walked in to replace him, striking a boundary square of the wicket on the off side to kick off his innings. Ibrahim, however, struck in the very same over, bowling Pengkumta with a quick delivery that clipped the top of the middle stump.

Chatphaisan struck another boundary to move onto 15 before he nicked left-armer Ahmed Ameel behind to leave Thailand reeling at 34 for 4 in the 11th over.

Two overs later, left-hander Honey Singh dragged Yoosuf Azyan back onto his stumps to leave Thailand 5 down with just 41 on the board in the 13th over.

Azyan would take another three wickets in his spell as Thailand’s required run rate spiralled out of control on the way to being bowled out for 56 with one delivery to spare in the 17th over.

Brief Scores:

Maldives 97 All Out in 19.3 Overs (Azyan 24, Ahmed Hassan 18, Senamontree 4-19) beat Thailand 56 All Out in 16.5 Overs (Chatpaisan 15, Azyan 4-12, Nasif 2-8) by 41 runs
