ICC CRICKET WORLDCUP CANADA- CHALLENGE LEAGUE A: MALAYSIA VS CANADA

Saad bin Zafar’s 5-fer downs Malaysia

Figures of 5-31 from left-arm spinner Saad bin Zafar helped bowl Malaysia out for 118 in a chase of 240 as Canada notched up another victory in Group A of the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup Challenge League.

After winning the toss and choosing to bat, Canada got off to a flyer.

In spite of losing skipper Navneet Dhaliwal in the third over when he drove Pavandeep Singh to Syed Aziz in the covers, Canada continued to hit regular boundaries to pile the pressure on Malaysia.

Matthew Spoors was at his elegant best, pulling Syed Aziz away off a delivery that wasn’t that short before laying into Dhivendran Mogan with a trio of boundaries through the off side. However, Dhivendran  Mogan would have the last laugh when Spoors attempted to collect another boundary on the off side, only managing to offer an easy catch to Virandeep Singh.

Dhivendran Mogan would strike again, dismissing Varun Sehdev for 1 to leave Canada in a spot of bother at 73 for 2 in the 12th over. Off-spinner Khizar Hayat then put the breaks on the scoring, dismissing Pathan for 49 (54) when he accepted a catch off his own bowling to leave Canada at 119 for 4 in the 25th over.

Harsh Thaker then walked to the crease and kept the scorecard ticking with the help of Shreyas Movva. However, Movva would soon be out stumped when Anwar Rahman dragged him out of the crease with a delivery that spun away from his outside edge.

In spite of wickets falling all around him, Thaker held strong, striking five boundaries in his knock of 57* (72) as the powerful Dillon Heyliger provided a late boost, lifting both Syed Aziz and Virandeep Singh over the leg side for a six a piece. Canada finished on 239/8 in their 50 overs as Hayat starred for Malaysia with figures of 1-23 in his 10 overs.

Chasing 240 for victory, Malaysia lost star batter Virandeep Singh in the second over of the innings when he hit Jeremy Gordon straight to Ravinderpal Singh. In the very next over, Syed Aziz lofted Varun Sehdev down the ground for two sixes before pulling him away for four.

Sadly for Malaysia, Syed Aziz would depart soon after with Gordon and Ravinderpal Singh combining for another wicket to leave Malaysia at 28 for 2 in the fourth over.

Wickets would continue to tumble for the men in yellow as captain Ahmad Faiz was trapped in front by Salman Nazar before Syahadat Ramli swept bin Zafar straight into the hands of Heyliger.

Promoted to bat at number four, Sharvin Muniandy looked in good touch, slog sweeping bin Zafar for six before cutting him away for four in the same over. Yet, just as Malaysia was building a partnership, Hayat was caught behind by Movva off the bowling of Heyliger to leave Malaysia 82 for 5 in the 19th over.

Moments later, Movva would be in the action again, whipping the bails off to get Vijay Unni stumped off the bowling of bin Zafar. With Sharvin Muniandy at the crease, there was an outside chance of Malaysia making a recovery. However, those hopes were dashed when Salman Nazar dismissed him, caught by Sehdev for 48 (65).

Malaysia were eventually bowled out for 118 with three deliveries to spare in the 30th over.

Brief Scores:

Canada 239 for 8 in 50 Overs (Thaker 59, Pathan 49, Hayat 1-23) beat Malaysia 118 All Out in 29.3 Overs (Muniandy 48, Saad bin Zafar 5-31) by 121 runs
