Oman win by 32 despite Virandeep, spinners impressing

Virandeep Singh backed up figures of 3-24 with an unbeaten 57 in Malaysia’s unsuccessful chase of 154 against Oman on the first day of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup Asia Qualifier in Nepal. Pavandeep Singh and Vijay Unni supported him with 1-21 and 1-27 in their respective four-over quotas.

Virandeep’s 13th half-century helped him become the first Malaysian to score 2000 runs in T20 Internationals.

After winning the toss and choosing to bat first, Oman got off to a flier. Kashyap Prajapati launched Syazrul Ezat down the ground for the first maximum of the day in a 17-run over to push the score to 29 for no loss after three.

Rizwan Haider struck back, dismissing Pratik Athavale before Pavandeep got the big scalp of Prajapati who was wrapped on the pads from around the wicket.

Things went from bad to worse for Oman. They had no answer for Virandeep who bowled Ayaan Khan before taking a return catch to send back Mehran Khan and reduce Oman to 106 for six with four overs to go.

However, Oman skipper Zeeshan Maqsood struck a few lusty blows to bring up his half-century and propel Oman to what would prove to be a winning score.

Chasing 154 to win, Malaysia got off to a nightmare start when in-form Syed Aziz was caught at slip off Bilal Khan’s bowling. Amir Azim was the left-armer’s next victim, getting bowled after playing across the line of a straight ball.  After flaying two boundaries through the off side early in his innings, Ahmad Zubaidi was bowled by Shakeel Ahmad for 14.

Ahmad Faiz began his 13-run cameo by sweeping Shakeel Ahmad away for four before flicking him away for another boundary to push the score to 36 for three at the end of the powerplay.

Yet again, however, Maqsood would prove to be the thorn in Malaysia’s flesh. He got Faiz caught behind by Athavale before bowling Khizar Hayat for a duck.

In spite of Virandeep’s stoic resistance, Malaysia could not keep up with the asking rate on a surface that was becoming more and more conducive for spin with every passing over.

Malaysia’s next game is against Nepal on Tuesday.

Brief Scores:

Oman 153/6 in 20 Overs (Maqsood 56*, Virandeep 3-24) beat Malaysia 121/8 in 20 Overs (Virandeep 57*, Maqsood 2-13, Bilal Khan 2-32) by 32 Runs

Player of the Match: Zeeshan Maqsood (Oman)
